President's
Message
From Helene
Carr
When I attended the Breast Health forum
and listened to the stories of the cancer survivors, I felt
very fortunate to be surrounded by women who are united by
a common bond – that of women striving for a greater
understanding of a disease that has hit so close to home;
either by personal experience or by striking a loved one.
The women who shared their experience impressed me with their
courage, tenacity and humor when faced with a life-threatening
situation. Thank you to Nancy Turner, Debbie Wescott and those
of you who participated in and supported this event.
On a lighter note, we have several events
on the horizon: The Cabernet and Chocolate event November
11 at Ursula Batz’. We will not only enjoy desserts,
wines and goodies provided by the members but will learn more
about the Legal Advocacy Fund. So bring your sweet tooth and
enjoy this event. It is always a sell out so call Erica Campisi
for reservations. A dessert contribution is welcome but not
mandatory.
Plans are going forward for another successful
Holiday Party – details can be found in this Shareline.
Helpers are needed so make your call to Joyce Morrison or
Linda Slater to volunteer your help.
November 7 is an important date; mark
your calendars and be sure to vote. There are women who have
gone before us that fought hard to give us this right so get
out there and honor them by casting your ballot.
I hope each and every one of you have
a wonderful Thanksgiving; I personally am thankful for all
the help and support you extend to me and to the board in
our endeavor to make this world a better one for everyone.

City
Of Hayward Year 2006 Lifetime Award
One of our members, Marlene Teel-Heim
was honored on October 26th at the Hayward Volunteer Dinner
with their highest award. Marlene was lauded by the Fire Chief,
the Police Chief, the head of St Rose Hospital and one of
our members Marilyn-Baker-Madsen who have all worked with
Marlene in her many volunteer activities in the community.
Marilyn described Marlene as having limitless energy, endless
enthusiasm, phenomenally positive attitude, and dedication
with panache: she inspires us to increase our own efforts
to help our community”.
Marlene, a former Catholic nun, says
that “art is a necessity, not a luxury”. With
this in mind, she helped organize the Hayward Arts Council,
chaired it for six years, and led HAC’s first major
project: sponsoring a competition in nine Bay Area Counties
for a City of Hayward poster. She has volunteered with the
Sun Gallery, headed the Hayward Zucchini Festival, helped
in the preservation of Hayward’s city hall on Mission
Blvd., took an active part in Hayward Neighborhood Alert,
did some mentoring of Junior High youngsters, worked on Project
Legacy at the Hayward Public Library and currently serves
on the board of the St Rose Hospital Foundation.
Recently, she married a childhood friend
Ron Heim. Her energy is boundless and we are proud to be able
to count her as a member of our AAUW branch. Congratulations
Marlene for all your wonderful volunteer activities.
Successful Breast Health &
Breast Cancer Forum
On Monday, October 16, thirty-seven people
gathered to hear a talk by a Breast Health Facilitator along
with the stories from five breast cancer survivors. Mr. Ken
Smith from the American Cancer Society was very informative
about the multiple manifestations of breast cancer, and he
provided a wide variety of literature. The breast cancer survivors,
Debbie Wescott, Norma Stephenson, Margaret Hankle and Donna
Jones, spoke with candor and humor about their diagnoses,
treatment and how their lives have been impacted by breast
cancer. Following a question and answer period, the event
ended with refreshments, and time for all to visit and peruse
the literature from AAUW, East Bay Cancer Support Group, 1st
Presbyterian and the American Cancer Society.
Hayward-Castro Valley AAUW sponsored this
event along with Halleluiah for Health from the First Presbyterian
Church in Castro Valley where the forum was held. Our branch
was well represented. Thanks to all who attended.
