President's Message

From Helene Carr

We’re off to another lively and successful year: good attendance at the New Member Meet and Greet at Buffalo Bill’s; wonderful support for our booth at the Castro Valley Fall Festival; and the great turnout for our membership potluck. Thanks to all of you who helped with and attended the events.

In honor of October being National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, give yourself a self-exam when you shower – early detection is critical. The Breast Health Forum is scheduled for October 16; please mark your calendar. Details are in this Shareline.

Also, our grapefruit is scheduled to be delivered in December. Liz Bathgate chairs this fundraiser and works tirelessly to make it a successful one. The delicious grapefruit makes a wonderful gift both to us and to others. I read recently that red grapefruit may lower cholesterol by as much as 15%.

We have some fun events on the horizon – please make your reservations early for Cabernet and Chocolate at Ursula Batz’. The Holiday Party is in the planning stages and the committee is still looking for volunteers and auction items. If you have an item you would like to donate and/or help, please contact Joyce Morrison.

The mailing of our new member directory is now underway and included with the directory is a questionnaire regarding the Shareline. Would you like to receive it online or by mail? Your response is important as this is your branch and if there are any suggestions or comments that you would like to contribute, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks again to all of you.

P. S. PLEASE REMEMBER TO VOTE IN NOVEMBER

Mary Mayer recently checked into Kaiser hospital for a pacemaker. She is now feeling peppy and is eager to get back to her many favorite activities.

Please keep me posted on members who need to receive a card of congratulations, encouragement, or just need to know we're here and we care.

Cabernet and Chocolate Event Is Coming

When: November 11, 7 to 9 p.m.
Where: Home of Ursula Batz
Castro Valley

Mark your calendar now!

Our annual Cabernet and Chocolate Event is a fund raiser for the Legal Advocacy Fund of AAUW (LAF). LAF supports women in higher education who are discriminated against because of their gender or sexually harassed in their work place. Litigants are supported by the Fund emotionally, legally and financially when they file litigation against their institution of higher learning. There are always many more deserving litigants applying for funds from LAF than the Fund is able to take on. To help promote this important work in our colleges and universities, our branch has long supported the work of LAF.

Annual Holiday Party & Silent Auction
Saturday December 2nd 1:00 – 3:00 pm
Hill & Valley Club, 1808 B Street Hayward

Do you have “white elephant” items, gifts, or collectables that you aren’t using & would like to donate for our annual holiday party & auction? Perhaps you have some homemade crafts, or art objects that you can put up for bid. Liz Bathgate is again donating a week’s use of her cabin at Lake Tahoe. This gift has been a great money maker, and all gifts benefit our Educational Foundation.

Items can be brought to the party, or dropped off at my home. If it is necessary, I can pick them up. It would be helpful if Joyce Morrison knows what is being contributed, so that bid sheets can be made. A meeting is planned from 10:00am until 4:00pm at Ms. Morrison’s house to plan the party & auction. Please sign up to help! Contact Joyce.

GRAPEFRUIT SALE

The wonderful juicy Ruby Red Grapefruit will once again be delivered to my house in a Semi truck. They will arrive in early December, just in time for Holiday giving. The cost has risen due to the cost of fuel.

The large boxes will now cost $15.00 each and will contain anywhere from 18-20 large, thin skinned grapefruit. I order five cases just for Bob and I and we hate it when we cut the last one in March. They keep well in our garage. We also order a number of cases to use as gifts. This is a fundraiser for the branch, so send you checks made out to AAUW Hayward/Castro Valley to Liz Bathgate in Castro Valley. The deadline for orders will be in mid November. Be sure and ask your friends if they want some!!!

Castro Valley Fall Festival

On a nice fall weekend the residents of Castro Valley gather for the Fall Festival. This year Hayward-Castro Valley Branch was fortunate to have a booth at the festival to make our branch more visible in the community; solicit new members; and hand out information about our various programs.

I want to thank the following members who gave generously of their time to make the event a success: Helene Carr, Charlotte Sladek, Ramona Bennett, Liz Bathgate, Evelyn Gertler, Darlene Scott, Estelle Raderman, Debbie Westcott, Marie McGrath, Lois Peach, Mariah Spriggs-Bruce (and her two boys), Ursula Batz, and Nancy Turner.

We found out that lots of women eligible for AAUW have not heard of our programs. We assertively handed out lots of flyers for our upcoming Breast Health, Breast Cancer forum and talked with a myriad of women and men about AAUW. It was fun, so next time a member calls you to volunteer, say YES!

Linda Slater, President Elect & CV Fall Festival Chair
